There have been many changes with refrigerants in recent years. In fact, numerous refrigerant rules have facilitated the rise of new refrigerants like R-454B over the years. That's why, in this article, we will answer the question: What is R-454B?

Because you will hear more about this new refrigerant as we go deeper into the national HFC phasedown, here's a great opportunity to learn more about it now on our Estes Education Center from your trusted Atlanta HVAC pros since 1949. It's that Easy; It's Estes!

Intro to New R-454B Refrigerant

Puron Advance is Carrier's new refrigerant that will replace Puron in all residential ducted and ductless and light commercial products.

With new regulations and sustainability initiatives for refrigerants, there has been increased interest in developing new, lower GWP products for the HVAC world. Such new products use lower GWP refrigerants like R-454B, which Carrier has selected as the refrigerant of choice to replace R-410A.

Solstice 454B (R-454B) is a zeotropic blend of R-32 and R-1234yf. It is a non-ozone-depleting refrigerant with a GWP of 465, which helps ensure that it will meet requirements across jurisdictions that may implement lower GWP limits in the future.

Additionally, R-454B is classified under the A2L safety group per ASHRAE Standard 34. A2Ls are considered "mildly flammable" refrigerants and are considered alternatives to higher GWP refrigerants.

Due to this safety classification, there are new handling, storage, and installation procedures to help ensure safety when working with A2L refrigerants. That's why it's essential to work with a licensed, trained, and NATE-certified commercial HVAC contractor for all your maintenance, repair, and replacement needs.
